Touchdown.

The moment mi paw step off that plane, mi feel it.

Jamaica nuh come fi play.

The sun slap mi straight — no warning.

Mi ears curl, mi tongue drop out, and mi eyes start beg fi ice water.

Lady Dee smile and seh:

“Breathe it in, Slippers — fresh yard breeze!”

Mi look pon her and seh:

“Fresh?! This breeze hotter than curry stove in July.”

Socks and Shoes deh quiet.

Real quiet.

One a dem flap halfway and collapse pon the suitcase like dem done wid flying forever.

Bubbles float low in him travel tank like him reconsidering immigration.

We reach di house.

Yard look good. Paint fresh, coconut tree in di back, lil welcome mat by the verandah.

Mi start think: maybe this trip might sweet after all…

Till mi step through di gate and realise — this nuh UK.

This Kingston.

Mi paws touch tile — hot like it just come outta oven.

New smells rush mi — bush breeze, ackee tree, roast breadfruit, and old iron gate rust.

One lizard skitter past mi like him own di yard.

And mi nose? Confused by all these Kingston memories mi never ask for.

Lady Dee inside now, talking pon her phone again:

“Mummy mi deh ya safe. Di pets dem reach too… Yes Mummy, Bubbles still vex but him alright.”

Meanwhile, Socks and Shoes trying fi cool down by fanning each other with dem wings.

Mi cyaan lie — mi feel sorry fi dem.

And Bubbles?

Still floating.

Still silent.

But him tank have condensation and mi swear mi see him mouthing:

“Mi rights. Mi filter. Mi cooler.”

Inside di house quiet.

Too quiet.

Mi lay down near di fan but it only blow hot breeze like somebody exhale tiredness.

Lady Dee open one window, sip coconut water, and seh:

“Slippers, yuh better adjust quick. A pure peace mi come for.”

Mi was about fi close mi eyes…

Then mi hear it.

“MAYYYYYY!”

Mi jump so high mi almost reach back to London.

Socks and Shoes flap wild.

One bird land in the bread basket.

Bubbles swim sideways in a panic.

Mi spin round.

And standing bold at the gate…

Was a goat.

Mi seh:

“This have to be a dream.”

The goat look calm.

Confident.

Like him own keys to the front door.

Lady Dee sip again and seh:

“Ohhh. Dat’s just Trevor. Him always come roun’ a look food when mi come.”

Mi blink.

Mi bark.

Trevor blink back like him not impressed.

Then him walk straight een…

Past the fan.

Past the fridge.

Straight to the middle of the floor… and SIT DOWN.

No manners.

No intro.

Just vibes.

Lady Dee smile and seh:

“Mi fly come home fi peace… and get parish problems.”

Mi seh:

“This nuh breeze — this chaos in disguise.”
